Admittedly, I don't have a lot to report from this week. I wasn't needed at the theater yet, so I don't have much to say about that. I did go there about a week ago to meet the people I would be working with and to be shown around so I would know where things were, though.
So what have I been doing this week? While I was there, I was asked to look into hairstyles to use for their production of a show called Back To the 80s, so I've been researching those, and looking into the makeup of the time too.
I'll be honest, I've been having some technical issues putting what I've found into practice. Because of this, I don't have any pictures of things I've done this week. My apologies. Instead, I have some pictures sent to me by one of the places I contacted in my research, Penrose Academy, pasted below!
Along with these came the products used to make these, which were mostly products to help with curling.
I also found all sorts of how-to videos on makeup in the 80s and other times. One particularly good series, Historically Accurate, by Zabrena on YouTube, also gives extras on the history around different products and their usages. They're interesting as more than just tutorials, though they are that too. Here's her 80s one, for anyone who wants to check them out:
Here's the link, too, if anyone want to find the rest of the series:
And now, for a tone shift. Gory makeup stuff below, be warned.
Along with 80s things I've been looking through tutorials for makeup effects more in my area of interest. I've found more than a few interesting things to try out there, so some of my attempts will likely be showing up here soon! Look forwards to it! (Or dread it. Either works.) A few things I want to try that I think I could plausibly do?

Here's a tutorial for a broken wrist effect by elliemacs sfx makeup, also on Youtube. They have a lot of things I'd love to try out. I might see if I can do something with this one for my next post! One thing I've figured out is that there are a lot of materials I haven't even looked into for making special effects. One, which both this and and another effect I'd really like to try, need something called sculpt gel, which I'll need to look into. The effect above can be made with other materials- the creators of the video recommended cotton and latex- but others can't.
An example? A really cool dissected arm effect which, at the moment, is what I most want to figure out how to make. Whether or not I'll succeed, only time will tell. Here it is:
And as ever, the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKlnw2AoYEQ
The video is by Freakmo, and I'll probably end up linking more of her videos in future posts- her things are amazing.
So there's what I've found and what I plan to work on! Next week, I'll try to have some things of my own to put up. Until then, I leave anyone reading this with one more very important thing I've learned this week:
Don't try to paste videos on OpenOffice.
That's all for this week! Thanks for reading!
Hope you are able to solve the issues you are encountering. I have to say, the gore stuff looks pretty good, will be fun to see your take on it.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm pretty excited to try that stuff out, honestly.
DeleteI think we can all agree we are going to have some of these weeks, especially at the beginning... I love that even with this situation, you were able to provide us with awesome tutorials, pictures, and videos!
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's true. Thanks!
DeleteHi Hannah,
ReplyDeleteI also encountered some difficulties this week. But hopefully as we get further down the road with our projects, everything will work out.
I was just wondering, do you prefer doing the gory or fashion/beauty make-up more?
That's true. I much prefer the gory makeup, honestly. I don't know much about beauty makeup.
